This high-winged monoplane is named after Vega, the fifth-brightest star, a bright blue dot 25 light-years away. The Lockheed Vega 5B is a bright red star in the aviation universe. It was the plane aviatrix Amelia Earhart flew on several historic flights in the 1930s.
On May 20, 1932, exactly five years to the day after Charles Lindberg began the first solo transtlantic flight, she took off in this Vega 5 and flew from Newfoundland to Ireland, the first woman to cross the Atlantic alone.
In 1937, after completing 22,000 miles of a 27,000 mile attempt to fly around the world, Earhart disappeared after taking off from New Guinea. She, her plane, and copilot were never found. Earhart's final flight was not in the Vega 5B, which is on display at the Smithsonian.
